Vodafone InsideOut, a Vodafone Beta trial is live on Second Life, the web-based virtual world – giving us a great opportunity to see how we can expose our services to rapidly-growing internet communities.
Vodafone is the first telecommunications provider to offer services to bridge communications between virtual worlds and real world using customers’ current, real-life phones while maintaining their virtual identities.
You are able to call and message fellow Second Lifers as your Avatar (your representation of yourself in the virtual world), whether they’re online or not. That means you can keep up with the virtual world while you’re out in the real world, with your real life phone.
Users get a fixed amount of free text and calling time. When they’re in Second Life they can get a Vodafone-branded virtual mobile free from a vending machine on Second Life’s Vodafone island and simply register with their real life mobile to activate the services.
The whole aim of the Beta version with voice and text services on Second Life will help Vodafone to understand how customers interact in the Internet communities of virtual worlds.
